From the President: The Power of Associations in the Face of Change

Writer: Cambria Happ, MPA, CAECambria Happ, MPA, CAE

This past week I attended the AMC Institute Annual Meeting, which brings together AMC owners and senior management from across North America. The event provided an opportunity to learn from colleagues, industry experts, and legal advisors on a range of topics affecting small businesses, AMCs, and the association industry. While energizing in many ways, the event also delivered important reminders about rapid societal changes and their impact on our businesses and clients.

My key takeaways include:

Policy Developments: We received updates from ASAE's Chief Public Policy and Governance Officer Mary Kate Cunningham, CAE, on key initiatives, including the Tomorrow's Workforce Coalition's efforts regarding the Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow's Workforce Act.

According to ASAE, this legislation "would expand qualified expenses under 529 savings plans to include post-secondary training and credentialing, such as licenses and nongovernmental certifications. It would provide valuable tax-advantaged resources to more workers pursuing career growth, mid-career changes, or alternative career pathways." This act creates more avenues for individuals pursuing association credentials. I encourage you to make your voice heard through ASAE's grassroots letter campaign here.

Artificial Intelligence: The use of AI is increasing, and we need to ensure we're using these tools appropriately within our businesses and associations. The Barcami Lane team is testing various AI solutions to understand their advantages while keeping personal information secure. We'll be working with our association boards to develop thoughtful policies on the use of AI.

AMC Education: The AMC Institute is developing tools to help inform and educate association volunteers about the AMC model for association management. Benchmark data, communication tools, and case studies will advance understanding of the model and demonstrate how AMC-association partnerships can strategically advance associations.

We witnessed the power of associations at the conference and are eager to apply these insights within our team and with our clients.

Until next time!
